Ace Hardware has provided free paint samples. I was also compensated for my time and this blog post. All opinions and positions expressed here are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of Ace Hardware.
When my boyfriend first moved to New York City, we made the decision to share an apartment, but we struggled with balancing our styles. I am a girly-girl to the core, and he prefers everything to be neutral. Within months we found ourselves in a neutral nightmare, and we both agreed there had to be a better way. By playing it safe, we ended up creating a space that neither one of us loved. We knew there had to be a way to compromise.
We decided to tackle the shared office space first. I have my own office out of the apartment, where I work daily, but in the evenings and on the weekends I love having a space to work in at the apartment. Since my boyfriend spends the least amount of time in the office, we agreed that as far as aesthetics, we would keep a balance, but really let my style shine through since I spend the most time in the area.
The Paint Studio at Ace Hardware has been hosting their 31 Days of Color campaign all throughout the month of March, unveiling a new color every day from their Valspar and Clark+Kensington paint collections. Today they are unveiling the shade California Cabernet and we felt the beautiful deep burgundy shade would be the perfect fit for our home office. The color was a great way to bring a bit of masculinity to the space. Most of the apartment is white, and we felt the color California Cabernet would be great for adding contrast to our home.
Since we created a dark accent wall, and already owned a deep chocolate brown desk, my boyfriend felt it was only fair that styling the desk would fall under my territory. I knew when styling the desk, and adding artwork, that I wanted to keep it very light and bright. I didn’t want any of the decor to blend into the wall, but instead help brighten up the area, and really let the wall color speak for itself. Rather than hang pieces on the wall, I decided to lean a couple pieces against the wall. Like I said, the wall color is a statement piece in itself, and we didn’t want to take away from it or overdo it.
We are so happy that with the help of the Paint Studio at Ace Hardware, and a little compromise, we were able to create a space we both love being in.
