Back To College: DIY Survival Kit

Target is my go-to store for most situations, but especially when it comes to Back to College shopping. Their selection is extensive, and their Made for U tool is fantastic for helping you and your roommate pinpoint your style and help you find the perfect products! When creating the ultimate college survival kit for my cousin, I first brainstormed a style and color scheme that would best fit her personality, with the help of the Made for U tool. I decided to go for a clean, black and white modern look, since my cousin is cool, trendy, and tech savvy. She’s all about what’s next, and I thought a cool white theme would be futuristic and her style.

Once it was time to make the kit, I opted for a large wire basket that she could use for laundry or storage once she’s settled into her dorm room. As for contents, I wanted to give her all of the essentials, plus some extras she could use to decorate her space! Bed sheets, a cozy blanket, and a throw pillow are crucial to keep your space comfortable and cozy! College dormitories typically mean communal showers, so a few fast drying towels seemed like a great, practical addition to her kit as well.

Living in a dorm freshman year can mean doing laundry for the first time as well, so I made sure to include products to keep her clothes, towels, and blankets smelling great! I also threw in make-up remover and face wash, which are obvious for a beauty-loving girl like her! College living can mean bad beauty habits but I want to make sure she knows how important it is to clean her face and remove her make-up … even if it’s 3 a.m. I also included coffee for those unfortunate, but inevitable early mornings after her late nights.

I couldn’t create a survival basket for my cousin without including a few decor pieces! To me, they’re essential. Your dorm room becomes your personal space for 4 years, so it’s important that you create a space both you and your roommate love living in! Lighting is key so I chose adorable flower string lights and a hashtag lamp to both decorate, and create great lighting for studying, or hanging out! As a tech savvy social media lover, I thought the hashtag lamp was a great piece to add to her room.

Lastly, I chose a magazine file to both complement her room and keep her organized! I thought the file would be a great place to keep her syllabi or papers she’s currently writing.
